Traditional Kitchens

This renovation began with a small, cramped kitchen. At only 159 square feet it was claustrophobic and cut-off from light and communication from other areas. An adjacent family/eating area had generous amounts of space and lots of light. The wall dividing the two spaces was removed, and the floors repaired and finished to match. This created one large, open and communicative room.

This kitchen draws its inspirationfrom the traditional butler’s pantries of the lavish homes of the early industrial magnate’s of the Hudson River Valley. Face frame cabinets, glazed uppers, and cup handles are all details that hearken back to a time gone by. A strikingly detailed range hood, ‘antique’ faucetry, and soapstone countertops complete the authenticity of this period. Finally, a marble-topped bakers table serves nicely as a prep island and serving counter

The new kitchen design only used 30 square feet from the eating area but looks large due to design features. Firstly, a very excellent work triangle for food preparation was created with the fridge, island sink and cooktop/oven. This highly functional work area is enhanced by a dramatic and highly detailed hood, carera marble on the island ‘table’, and a pump style faucet for the prep sink. Fridge position is also very practical for kids and others to get drinks without disturbing the cooking zone. On the other side of the kitchen, soapstone clean-up sink, dishwasher, and plenty of glass door uppers make clean-up & dish storage very practical. Microwave and coffee systems are installed in a demi-tall cabinet, maintaining the open feeling. White subway tiles complete the look in a simple and elegant finish.
